High sample quality and reproducible
results can only be achieved with high quality consumables. Selecting
the right consumables for each specific application is not just a
matter of preparation quality - it is also the best way to save time
and money.
METKON® cutting, grinding, mounting and polishing consumables

| Cutting |
Sample
preparation starts with cutting and good cutting means
a good start. Selecting the right cut-off wheel ensures
freedom from burn and distortion and is the best way to
save time and consumables. Correct cutting produce specimens
which are in perfect condition for the next preparation
steps.
Abrasive Cutting:
The most commonly used abrasives for the cutting of different
materials are Si C and Al2 O3.
Silicon carbide is suitable for non-ferrous metals whereas
Aluminium Oxide is preferred for ferrous metals. Hard
wheels are used for cutting soft materials while soft
wheels are recommended for cutting harder materials. All
METKON® cut-off wheels have an arbor diameter of 32mm.

Diamond Cutting:
METKON® diamond cut-off
wheels are available in resin bond as well as in metal
(bronze) bond.
Metal bonded wheels are used for cutting brittle materials,
such as ceramics or minerals, while resin bonded wheels
are used for more ductile materials, such as sintered
carbides or composites containing hard phases.

| Mounting |
After
cutting the specimen the next step is mounting. The aim
of mounting is to protect fragile materials, thin layers
or coatings during perparation as well as to provide good
edge retention. Mounting produces specimens with uniform
size so that it is easier to handle in automatic holders
for future preparation steps.
The most important properties of a mounting compound are;
Hardness, Shrinkage and Viscosity.
The hardness of the compound should match the hardness
of the specimen in order to avoid uneven abrasion during
grinding. If the shrinkage during curing is large, a gap
between the specimen and the mount will occur and edge
will not be adequately protected. Viscosity is important
to reach to all areas.
Two different types of hot mounting media are available;
Thermosetting and Thermoplastic. Thermosetting compounds
harden under combined heat and pressure and can be taken
out of the mould at elevated temperature. Thermoplastic
compounds do not require high pressure either for melting
or curing. However, cooling nearly to room temperature
is necessary. Due to low mounting pressure required, thermoplastic
are widely used to mount fragile and sensitive specimens.

Grinding:
In order to obtain scratchfree surfaces without deformation,
successive material removals by abrasives is necessary.
Grinding is the next stage after sectioning. Grinding
is divided into two processes: Coarse grinding and Fine
grinding.
The purpose of coarse grinding is to obtain a level surface
and to remove scale, burrs or surface irregulation from
the specimen. Fine grinding removes the deformation resulting
from coarse grinding to make the surface ready for polishing
which is the final stage.

Polishing:
After grinding, the quality of surface finish is not adequate
for microscopic analysis. Therefore, it is essential to
improve the surface quality by polishing. Different polishing
clothes are used for different applications. Alumina and
Diamond compounds are used as polishing agents. Alumina
powders and suspensions are available from 0.05 to 1 micron
whereas diamond pastes have particles sizes from 0.25
to 15 microns.
